Hotels near Stavanger Sola Airport – and why Forus is often a better choice

Stavanger Sola Airport is the main gateway to the region for both business travellers and tourists. When you land – often late in the evening – it is tempting to just book the closest hotel you can find. But "closest" is not always best.

Hotels right next to Sola

There are a handful of hotels within a short drive of the terminal. They are practical for one reason: you can roll your suitcase through reception ten minutes after your flight has landed. They also share a few common downsides:

• Higher prices, because you are paying for proximity.
• Very little around them – no shops, few restaurants.
• Runway noise on rooms with a less favourable orientation.
• Standardised rooms with no local character.

For a single overnight before an early morning flight, that is fine. For anything else there are better options.

Drive from Sola toward Stavanger or Sandnes and you are in the Forus area in around 13 minutes. That is short enough that you do not feel like you have "driven far", but far enough to escape airport pricing.

• Restaurants, shops and groceries within walking or a short drive.
• A quieter night – without aircraft traffic overhead.

When does it actually pay to stay near the airport?

There are a few scenarios where airport proximity is genuinely useful:

• You have a very early morning flight and want to minimise risk.
• You have a stopover with only a few hours between flights.
• You have a lot of luggage and no rental car.

In every other case – especially if you have a rental car or are in the area for several days – it is better to sleep a little further from the airport.
